The Bucks' played a 2nd consecutive goal-less draw on Tuesday evening in, to date, their strongest challenge as 'the Tigers' had last April qualified for the NPL Premier play-offs. Unfortunately, last season's injury curse had returned to deprive the visitors of Granite, Popoola, Pedro & Stobbs, yet the young 'Bucks' did well versus a vastly experienced, physically strong Worksop team that included 6 ex-Silverlanders, with 5 of them in the starting line-up.
Buxton's 4-2-3-1 formation featured Diego as the lone striker and he drove wide early on before the ex-'Bucks' duo of Dan Bramall & Luke Shiels put efforts off target, with 'keeper True Grant also keeping out a Liam Hughes (ex-Matlock) power-drive Then in the 19th minute a home free-kick from 22 yards struck a post as, at the other end, Buxton showed neat approach play from time to time. Their clearest opening, created by holding midfielder Will Trueman's interception, saw Diego played through the centre but he was thwarted by a marginal offside decision that must have been of the 'toenail' variety beloved of VAR!
Six minutes into the 2nd half Worksop were reduced to 10 men when Shiels was dismissed for fouling attacking midfielder Ben Sault as he was played clear. 'The Bucks' then twice went close after substitute Sam Tomlinson, the youngest player on the 3G pitch, had beaten 3 men in a pacy midfield run. Firstly, the trialist left-back fired untouched across the face of goal, then Tomlinson's pull-back from the left set up Connor Kirby for an 18-yard drive that rebounded from the bar. The evening's last action saw the hosts again strike a post with Grant making a fine save from the follow-up.
'The Bucks' have an additional fixture on Saturday (20th) when a Huddersfield Town side will visit. Recently 'the Terriers' sent strong teams to Guiseley (won 7-0) & Emley (won 5-0).Please note that kick-off will be at 2 p.m.
We are delighted to announce the arrival of former Lincoln City, Boston United and Kettering Town midfielder Ben Sault (Pictured). Ben is reunited with John McGrath after a season together at Mickleover last term.
