Promotion aspirants Southport couldn't cope with the goalscoring prowess and defensive strengths of visitors Buxton, 4-1 winners in Saturday's (October 29th) Vanarama National League North challenge, just days after the Bucks had accounted for another high-flying team, Darlington, 2-1 at the Tarmac Silverlands.
It has been an injury-ridden season for Buxton and Tommy Elliott, recently back after a lay-off, missed out on Saturday to be replaced by Matt Sargent. However, manager Jamie Vermiglio could maintain the same shape as against Darlington and it was the foundation for his side's biggest win so far at this level.
The goals feast started through Connor Kirby in the closing minutes of the first half, then Diego de Girolamo and Sam Osborne after the break, with Southport's consolation coming in added time, followed quickly by Jason Gilchrist's strike to complete the 4-1 scoreline.
"Southport is not an easy place to get a result. Their recent efforts have put them on top of the good-form table. They're a very good team," said Jamie Vermiglio. Full Match Report HERE
"We had to defend and we were excellent at keeping them out. At the other end, we took almost every chance that came our way. They put us under lots of pressure, yet we showed real character and courage.
"We rode our luck but that was achieved by working hard for our shirts and the travelling supporters. Now all attention shifts to the FA Cup. It's a massive occasion for the town."
Pre-match tickets for Saturday's visit of Merthyr Town in the FA Cup First Round can be bought at the ground on Monday 31st from 10am to 2pm and Tuesday 1st, 5pm to 6.30pm. Further opportunities to buy ahead of the game will be announced on social media.
The draw was made earlier for the 2nd Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy and the Bucks will travel to Blyth Spartans. The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday 19th of November.
