One of the most attractive footballing sides in the Vanarama National League North, Buxton excites followers and earns respect from opponents. Match after match, possession is dominated and the performance marked by free-flowing football. Such was the league match at Curzon Ashton on Saturday February 22. But the scoreline? Curzon Ashton 1 Buxton 0. There is no gain without goals and the Bucks did just about everything but score in front of their noisily enthusiastic travelling supporters.
Three points lost rather than three gained and team manager John McGrath said afterwards his squad needs to take stock and concentrate on what matters most, hitting the back of the net.
As part of first half domination, the Bucks won a free-kick in an attacking position, only to give the ball away and allow Curzon Ashton to notch up the softest of goals in the 42nd minute. As it turned out, that was the only score, despite the home goalkeeper and his back line being tested right up to the final whistle.
John McGrath said: "There are still 36 points to play for. Now, it's a 12-game season for us. and we'll have to get it right at both ends.
"Their goal today was of our making, caused by negative play. But I'd still have been disappointed without that goal. We had countless chances to turn things around and earn the points. We can play brilliant stuff but only goals win games. it is a squad effort, led by goals."
On Tuesday the Bucks travel to Hereford for a league game, kick-off 7.45pm. Next at home will be Scunthorpe United on Saturday (March 1), starting at 3pm. Tickets for visiting supporters from Scunthorpe can be purchased HERE
