Buxton's 3rd pre-season friendly finished goal-less but there was much that was positive for the visiting 'faithful' to enjoy from their new team's performance. Just 3 of last season's side started the game in a 4-4-2 formation that produced lots of attractive, passing, attacking soccer in a dominant first hour's display lacking only goals. One cause of that was a few examples of wayward shooting from promising positions but mostly it was an outstanding show by home 'keeper, Dino Visser (ex-Crewe & Hereford) that thwarted the visitors.
Only 5 minutes in, left-back Josh Williams (Pictured) delivered a fine cross, but Visser delivered a fine cross but Visser splendidly diverted Diego's 10-yard, low half-volley & 7 minutes later the 'keeper similarly denied Tommy Elliott's low, goal-bound effort following a fast, accurate passing move. Visser then advanced to rob an attacking midfielder before Leek, at the half-hour, produced their first threatening moment as left-back Weir's low, diagonal cross evaded everyone. Four minutes on Elliott made a typical rum forward to feed Williams in space 20 yards out but his shot passed over the bar.
Buxton's penetrative play continued into the second half with a Diego shot being deflected for a corner, from which striker Djavan Pedro headed over the bar, then Visser again produced saves to deny finishing attempts, the second from Pedro at a narrow angle.
Both camps made the usual numerous substitutions in the last 25 minutes, but the visitors left encouraged by a well-organised, committed display that was much-improved on the last outing at Leek 2 years ago. On Tuesday (at 7-30) 'the Bucks' visit Worksop Town, who reached last season's NPL Premier play-offs and will therefore provide a stern test.
